  2. The Link Visiting Scheme - befriending service and social activities for older people

    The Link Visiting Scheme

    The Link Visiting Scheme helps older people who need friendship and support as they are experiencing loneliness and isolation. We support our ‘Link friends’ through one-to-one befriending with volunteers, and local group activities and events. We operate within the Wokingham borough and work in partnership with many other local organisations. We are one of the founding members of the ‘Friendship Alliance’.

    We offer a personalised service where we match the Link friend with a volunteer to visit or call them on a regular basis for companionship, or with a social activity that interests them outside of their home.

    By offering older people quality time and focussed attention, we help them establish new friendships and connections in their communities, improve their health and wellbeing, and help them remain independent for longer.

    Volunteering

    We rely on volunteers in all aspects of our work and offer a range of volunteering opportunities to suit most time commitments or interests.

    For our befriending service we ask volunteers to offer one or two hours a week or fortnight to either call or visit an older person local to you.

    For our group activities we have lots of opportunities from driving, organising small group fun, helping older people with technology, helping older people connect to nature or office based tasks.

    The Silver Line helpline is a national organisation open 24 hours a day, every day and night of the week.

    The Silver Line

    The Silver Line is the UK’s only free, confidential helpline for older people, open every day and night of the year. Offering information, friendship and support, callers can access the service whenever they need to speak to someone, by calling 0800 4 70 80 90, which is free of charge from both landlines and mobiles. 

    For those wishing to receive regular calls we can connect people with the Telephone Friendship Service. Delivered by Age UK, in partnership with The Silver Line, people can be matched to receive a regular weekly call, from a friendly volunteer.
