Tayler Made Childminding - Nicki Tayler (Nicola Tracy Tayler)
My name is Nicki and I am an Ofsted registered childminder in Earley, Reading. I was graded Outstanding by Ofsted in January 2022 and specialise in the care of under 3s. I am 48 and have been married to my husband, Ian since 2003. We have three children - James, 18, Jack, 16 and Millie, 12.
We live in a detached house situated in Earley with good access links to the A4 and M4. We have a dedicated playroom, somewhere quiet for little ones to sleep and a large, enclosed, secure garden offering lots of opportunity for little ones to explore.
We are very fortunate to have a heated swimming pool which is separate from the garden play area. During the warmer months I am happy to help the children gain water confidence and have lots of splashy fun (with parents permission and when ratios allow).
We have a friendly dog called Shellie who has been with us since July 2013 and has proved an asset to the children's learning and understanding of animals. She is a 'Shih Tzu', - basically small, cute and fluffy. We find that our current parents are keen that their children gain all the advantages and confidence/experience of being with a puppy but without them having to have the commitment at home.
I provide a warm, safe, friendly home environment, with a family atmosphere in which children feel valued, can play, learn and develop. Children will receive lots of individual attention whilst enjoying interaction with others. I appreciate that parents are the most important people in a child's life and therefore consult with parents on all aspects of their child's care.
Before children I worked as a Personal Assistant in a large corporate environment and when I returned to work after James was born I used both a nursery and then a childminder. I understand how important it is to find the right childcare and the pressure placed on working parents and I therefore aim to be as flexible and reliable as I can.
I aim to support your child's personal development and prepare him or her for the future. I follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in my setting which is a statutory framework that sets the standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to five. I plan activities on a weekly basis, considering the children's next steps and current interests to choose appropriate activities based on our current topics and books. The children also participate in free play where they are able to choose their own activities, toys and games to play. A typical week would include story times, messy play, crafts, painting, play dough, trips to the park or places such as Dinton Pastures, Beale Park, sand and water play, daily outdoor activities as well as toddler groups and music sessions.
I am a Forest Childcare Provider and I believe that spending time outdoors is very important. The children go outdoors here every day, at least once a day, no matter what the weather because I believe that fresh air and wide open spaces are good for them! We have a fully enclosed back garden that the children can access whenever they want. But we also live near to lovely parks, woodland areas and nature reserves and we visit one of these places at least once a week.

Local Offer - Support available for children and young people with additional needs
Local Offer last reviewed 13/06/2018
1. How does the childminder identify children with additional needs or SEND ?
Children in my setting are observed in line with the EYFS guidelines through the use of progress trackers and reports.
Two year old developmental checks are carried out and shared with parents, allowing discussion for any concerns they or I may have with regards to their child's development and can be shared with the child's Health Visitor.
The needs of children who are new to my setting are identified through discussion with the child's parents, taking on board any information which may come from other professionals involved with the family. This enables me to identify the starting points in the childs' learning journey.
Parents are also encouraged to fill out an 'All About Me' form for their child, focusing on the child's strengths, areas for development, home life, interests & language. This helps further to identify the types of activity or support that may benefit the child.
2. How will I be informed / included about the ways in which my child is being supported ?
I believe that building a secure relationship with a child is very important and I am keen to work together with parents. By working together through good communication, I find that it can help build confidence and promote positive self-esteem, helping the child to feel both emotionally & physically secure.
Parents are given their child's observations folder (Learning Journey) on a termly basis which includes, observations, achievements, progress tracker and next steps. All this information can also be seen by parents at any time on the Baby's Days online system I use in my setting. At the beginning and end of each session, there is opportunity to chat about any immediate concerns and achievements.
3. How will the childminder adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child?s needs ?
Most activities are 'child-led' in order to build learning around the children's interests. From these child-led activities, observations are taken & assessment made which will highlight any developmental areas that need to be focused on.
Whilst many activities are child-led, I provide resources for your child that will enable them to be stretched and supported in their area of need.
Each child is a unique person and they are allowed to explore and investigate with support and encouragement whilst being assured of their safety. An extension of these experiences are offered as and when a child is ready through planned activities.
4. What additional support does the childminder provide for children with additional needs or SEND ?
All children are given clear and consistent boundaries so that they feel secure. These boundaries are discussed with parents in order to work together to create similar expectations both at home and whilst at my setting
I use the local Children's Centre drop ins for resources and support and utilise Pacey's online training to further my knowledge in SEN
All children have the opportunity to visit local parks that has been especially designed to include children with additional needs
Parents are involved throughout by having regular meetings to discuss their child's progress. These meetings are documented and a copy sent to parents. In turn, I ask for a copy of any information given to parents by other professionals and, where applicable, follow any advise / therapy given
5. How will the childminder monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this ?
All children in my setting have a progress tracker that plots their development. These are assessed termly and shared with parents. However, this might be more frequent if there are any significant changes or concerns.
A 2 year developmental check and report is done around a childs' second birthday. This is a very good way to see where a child is in terms of their development. A copy of this is given to parents and another goes with them when they see the Health Visitor at their 2 Year Review meeting.
Reviews are also suggested to be had between myself and the childs' nursery / school if they attend in order to information share and to make sure we're all working towards the same support and goals.
6. How does the childminder ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips ?
Activities and trips are researched ahead of time and risk assessed appropriately. If they are not suitable for all children in attendance that day then I change our plans so that everyone can be included.
7. How accessible is the childminder?s home for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users ?
My home is NOT wheelchair accessible. However, for those who have mobility difficulties but do not need a wheelchair, my setting is based entirely on the ground floor of my home and includes a downstairs toilet, lounge, bedrooms, dining room and large play room.
8. How will the childminder contribute to my child?s transition to a new setting or school ?
I have a good working relationship with the local pre-school. We have good communication between us and work together in partnership.
9. How does the childminder assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation ?
Through frequent communication with parents and other settings the child may access. Also through the use of questionnaires and feedback forms.
10. What should I do if I am considering registering for a place with this childminder ?
Please feel free to email, text or call me and we can discuss your requirements.
11. What arrangements does the childminder have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints ?
My complaints procedure is documented in my Parents Information Pack which all parents receive.
Any complaints made against me (which are none, to date) will be documented and produced for viewing if asked.
Parents and children are asked annually to provide feedback via a questionnaire and families are also asked to write a reference for me when they move on from my setting. I use the questionnaire feedback to evaluate and improve my practice and my references are kept in my Parent Information Folder which prospective parents are welcome to view.
