The Children's Trust - Specialist residential neurorehabilitation
In 1985 we started the UK’s first paediatric brain injury rehabilitation service and today we run the country’s largest service of its kind from our national specialist centre in Tadworth, Surrey.
As one of the only services which can provide the most complex rehabilitation to children and young people with acquired brain injury outside of a hospital setting, our work sees us support children and young people aged 0 – 18 from right across the UK.
Our flexible services reflect the range of abilities and needs of children with brain injuries; from those who are minimally conscious to those who appear to have made a full physical recovery but are left with ‘hidden’ challenges with their cognition, memory, communication and behaviour.
Our services aim to:
- maximise each child’s potential
- restore lost skills where possible, develop new skills and provide compensatory approaches as needed
- facilitate new learning beyond the end of the child’s natural recovery period
- develop an understanding of the child’s strengths and needs
- ensure the child’s home environment is modified for the way they will function after their brain injury
- prevent secondary problems such as joint contractures developing and promote postural care
Neurorehabilitation programmes at The Children’s Trust are flexible and adapt to the needs of each child. Our multidisciplinary team offers an integrated approach to assessment and treatment. We combine medical care, therapy, education, play and family support to help children achieve their goals and maximise their ability to participate in family life and education when they go home.
Step-down services
We offer step-down placements supporting the transition from hospital to home for medically-stable children and young people aged 0-18 with complex health needs. These placements typically follow surgical procedures, prolonged stays in intensive care units or where the child might be staying in hospital due to discharge barriers.

All our facilities are fully accessible. Staff ensure each child participates to the best of their ability in decision making, their individual timetable, and play and leisure activities. We use a range of communication aids to enable all children to participate even if they are non-verbal. Please feel free to contact us in advance to discuss your specific needs and we will work with you to resolve any access issues as far as possible.

All staff and volunteers are required to complete and pass DBS prior to commencement of employment or placement. Our services are regulated by Ofsted and CQC, and we have robust safeguarding and whistleblowing procedures to ensure the safety of the children and young people we work with.
Safety is of paramount importance to us and ratios of staff to children are worked out in accordance with their needs. Our site is secure with all of our residential houses featuring keypad entry and all visitors must be supervised onsite. Whilst we encourage the children and young people to access play and leisure activities and the local community, this is fully-staffed and always with risk assessments having been carried out.
Each child has their own assessment and tailored programmes/timetables which cater for their individual needs. We are inspected by Ofsted and CQC as well as carrying out our own ongoing monitoring including feedback from staff, families and children where possible.

We have an unparalleled reputation in our field thanks to our commitment to meeting the diverse needs of these children and their families, coupled with our ability to deliver the best possible combination of nursing, therapy, medical care and education. Staff undertake continuing professional development both in-house and externally and are fully trained to meet the diverse needs of the children we work with. All staff undertake safeguarding training and first aid training is completed as required.
